Consume spirits from Horror In Clay’s monster mugs

As a horror movie fiend and tiki mug collector, Jonathan “Atari” Chaffin, married his two passions with his first Horror In Clay creation, the Cthulhu Tiki Mug, the centerpiece of the Pickman’s Cove Collection, in 2012. Cthulhu’s tentacles weren’t just wrapped around its namesake mug but also ensnared the accompanying swizzle sticks, bar spoon, jigger and everything else you might find in a tiki bar from your worst Lovecraftian nightmares.

Cthulhu Tiki Mug“I collect tiki mugs and horror autographs and thought, ‘If I had a tiki bar, what would the coasters look like? What would the tiki mugs look like? What would the swizzle sticks look like?’,” says Chaffin. “I’m a graphic designer, so I designed all these things. Then I thought, ‘I wonder what it would cost to get one of these made.’ It turns out, it would cost a lot to have one made. But once you have the mold made, you can make more. So I decided to do a Kickstarter and that’s where the Cthulhu Tiki Mug came from. It’s for a fictitious tiki horror bar I design stuff for. When I designed the first mug, Cthulhu is holding a fog cutter mug, which is an homage to Trader Vic’s. Then I designed the Innsmouth Fogcutter mug, which became the second mug in 2014.”

The backstory of each collection is fleshed out not only within the intricacies of each mug’s design, but with the accompanying hardware and other collectibles Chaffin designs. So, while it might just be a unique way for some horror fans to consume their libations, for others it’s an immersive experience that adds to the mythos of the stories and creatures being portrayed.

“All of our mugs are designed as collections with backstories,” says Chaffin. “There are actually cryptographic clues that are hidden in the T-shirts, the recipe cards and the mugs that tell an additional narrative. I like the idea of hiding clues throughout the collections and throughout the different product lines that call back to each other. For example, The Cthulhu is holding the Innsmouth Fogcutter, and if you look at the Innsmouth Fogcutter you can see Cthulhu’s eyes looking out on the lower part of the mug.”

All of Horror In Clay’s mugs are fired at very high temperatures, making them very durable restaurant-quality containers. Unfortunately the Pickman’s Cove watering hole referenced in the Cthulhu collection and the Gilman House mythologized in the Innsmouth Fogcutter assortment aren’t real places that serve drinks in Chaffin’s mugs. You can, however, drink from Horror in Clay creations at Tacoma Cabana in Tacoma, Wash. and Cane and Table in New Orleans. They’ll even let you take home the mug for a premium price.

Cask of Amontillado Barrel MugChaffin’s most recent release is the Amontillado Barrel Mug Collection based on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado. After meeting sculptor and mask maker Andrew Bones at Monsterama last year (they’ll both be vendors there again this year), Chaffin and Bones came up with a unique pairing to help break open this cask-themed collection.

“Part of what we do is explore the Zeitgeist of whenever something is set,” says Chaffin. “The Cask of Amontillado is set in the 1780s or 1790s and the story references that Montresor is wearing a mask. What did that mask look like? There’s a style of Italian mask that most people recognize from the movie Amadeus called a bauta. What’s interesting is everyone could wear them, so you always had to assume whoever you were speaking to was noble. Commoners could sneak into ritzy parties and be treated like lords and ladies.

“Another interesting thing about the bauta is it doesn’t actually cover the mouth,” he continues. “So you can speak, eat and drink. One of the things you have to design your Halloween costume around is, ‘Can I party in this costume?’ I knew I wanted to offer a wearable mask as part of The Cask of Amontillado collection. None of the commercially-available ones were sturdy enough to really survive an evening of hanging out. I had bought one of Andrew’s Krampus masks and wore it out for an evening during the Krampus Krawl last year. I really liked it, so I asked him if he could make some bautas. One of the levels on the Kickstarter for The Cask of Amontillado was Montresor’s bauta. Hopefully we’ll see some people wearing those and drinking out of their Cask mugs for Halloween.”

Chillinghast's Dark Lantern Tiki MugChaffin is also considering releasing a red glaze variant of the Amontillado Barrel called the Cask of the Red Death with a matching red mask. Offering different color variations of his mugs is an idea Chaffin is resurrecting for Chillinghast’s Dark Lantern collection, based on a recurring character at Netherworld haunted house known simply as The Collector. A limited number of corpse blue mugs are available through Horror In Clay’s website, while the burnt bone version is available exclusively through Netherworld’s gift shop, which opens Sept. 25. This collection is rounded out by glow-in-the-dark swizzle sticks, a coaster with a recipe for the Spirits of the Dead cocktail and other novelties.

“The mug depicts elements from the backstory of Netherworld’s iconic character The Collector, who lurks around the Whyshburg Burial Grounds,” he says. “One side shows him at the gates of the cemetery. The other side is a closeup of the lantern The Collector carries to collect the Spirits of the Dead.”

Bogey bugs out about Netherworld’s Season of the Witch and Spliced

Netherworld is the type of place most of us go to encounter ghouls, ghosts and other ghastly creatures to get into the spooky Halloween spirit. Or, for other types of wayward souls and wandering spirits, it’s a good place to find monsters with similarly sinister sensibilities for scaring people. As enchantresses cackle and creep in Season of the Witch and the Mangler continues his underground genetic experiments in Spliced, a weirdo named Bogey wanders the areas in between in hopes that his pets will make some new friends. Only problem is, not many people want to pet his hissing cockroaches! And I can’t help but wonder if he has anything to do with that giant roach I encountered inside Netherworld before conducting this interview. As strange as he may be, however, Bogey is still one of the more approachable of the Netherspawn. Which is exactly why Wrestling with Pop Culture decided he was the safest person to talk to about this year’s Netherworld haunted house.

How long have you been involved with Netherworld? Where did you come from and how did you come to be involved with these ghouls?

Netherworld's BogeyWell, I’ve been here at Netherworld for about two and a half years. Before that I worked at a big scientific lab. They had a whole buncha Madagascar hissing cockroaches that they would study, and ol’ Bogey took care of ’em. Can’t tell you which one, though. Last time I did, I got myself in trouble. There was all kindsa hubbub ’bout how the law said I can’t talk about the weird experiments and stuff they were doing in there to get themselves shut down and I had to hide out for a while. There’s not a lot of places a guy like me with a big colony of bugs in tow can go. For some reason, people think me and my babies are creepy. Then it clicked – maybe we can find a home where the other creepy things live. So I came here to Netherworld. They seem to like my babies, and these weird monsters haven’t eaten me yet. So I figure we must belong here. Fine by me. I fit in better with these freaks than those smarty pants scientists anyway.

You spend most of your time wandering around outside with your pets. Explain your fascination with these roaches. Why do you think people tend to be repulsed by you and your pets when you approach them?

The Maddies, as I like to call them, are basically my kids. Not like these nasty-ass roaches that run around in your kitchen. These roaches are clean. They’re sweet. They’re cuddly. They’re perfect. Those sleek shells, their cute little faces – what’s not to love? Hell, it’s the bugs’ world. They just let us live in it. Anyway, one night I was hanging out with the colony and I realized that there was a whole bunch of people waiting to check out Netherworld. So I said to myself, “Self, you should take the bugs outside and introduce them to these folks.” The bugs like people, so I figured they could make some new friends. Now I wander around in the lot trying to get people to pet the babies. Sometimes they do, but sometimes they tell me they’re gross or freak out. For the life of me, I can’t understand why. I don’t like it when people badmouth my babies or act all scared of them. That’s when I have to get a little nasty with ’em and insist that they pet the roaches. It usually ends up in a lot of running and screaming.

The Mangler is back at it this year with Spliced, his latest endeavor. He seems like a guy you might have spent some time with. Do you have any sort of relationship, working or personal, with the Mangler? Have you ever been part of his underground experiments?

That guy kinda gives me the creeps. Reminds me too much of those brainy weirdos I used to work for. He’s always up to no good, just like they were. I let him use my babies in his experiments a couple of times. He promised he wouldn’t hurt them, but I found out he was splicing them with people he snagged and was trying to make bugmen or something. Sucks to that! I steer clear of him as much as possible. If you go see the whole Spliced thing he has going on, I’d suggest you stay far, far away from him.

Netherworld's Season of the WitchIt’s also the Season of the Witch at Netherworld. I’ve taken a stroll through the witches’ realm and saw some frightening things. What do you think these witches are up to, especially when it comes to The Dead Ones who ruled Netherworld last year? Do you have any ties to them or any of their minions?

Those crazy witches seem to think that if they let all of the beasties loose and make the world as horrific and scary as possible, The Dead Ones might not wanna set up shop here after all. I dunno if that’s gonna work, but if it keeps them away, I say, “Go for it!” I’ll just be here with my babies watching the whole thing go down. They say roaches will survive the apocalypse. Maybe they’ll let me hang around, too, seeing as how I feed them and all. The only folks out of the witches’ crew that I hang out with are the Sawyers. They’re the ones up there running around with chainsaws and throwing people in cages. Ralphus, the big one, that’s one sadisitc bastard. People say we look alike, but I don’t see it. His little sister Lyla might even be nuttier than him. We’re more or less on the same side, though. So we’re cool. I just wouldn’t want to be one of you on their bad side.

The Sawyers look awfully familiar. I think I’ve seen some of them at some of the indie wrestling events I’ve been to.

Then you go to some weird wrestling shows. Like I said, they’re bloodthirsty freaks. So they like those death  matches. You know, barbed wire and thumbtacks and stuff. The sort of shows IWA Deep South does. I think Ralphus even makes weapons for ’em. As far as wrestling goes, I like it all, man. Since I spend all of my time hanging around with monsters, I really dig Monstrosity Championship Wrestling. It’s cool to see my kinda sickos mixing it up in the ring. Honestly, though, I’m happy any time folks are beating each other between the ropes. I dig the violence. You know, maybe I do have a little of Ralphus’ sadistic streak in me after all.

Netherworld's Ralphus SawyerThe Netherspawn emerge for about a month or so each year. Where will Bogey crawl away to once they’ve gone back into hiding after Nov. 8?

I’ll be right here in the bowels of the building looking after my roaches. Being the bug daddy is a full-time gig. While the Mangler’s in there doing God-only-knows what, and the witches stir those cauldrons of theirs, I’ll be protecting the colony and hanging out with my best six-legged buddies. That’s why, before the crowds die again, I have to make as many of you as possible pet my babies!

Netherworld’s Goblin King discusses The Dead Ones and MCW

Since 1997, the creatures of Netherworld have helped make Halloween quite a frightful time in the Atlanta area. In recent years, the hideous Goblin King has been a sinister presence whose singing or sheer terror have had souls surrendering to his control. As you traverse the aquatic agonies, undead horrors and other malevolent maniacs (including a giant roach!) in this year’s main haunt The Dead Ones, be wary of what resides inside the Goblin Cave. At Netherworld, the Goblin King is just one of many monsters vying for your demise. But this year the Goblin King is venturing into another monstrous realm as Monstrosity Championship Wrestling takes over the Axis Arena in Gotham City at Six Flags Over Georgia for Six Flags Fright Fest. As both attractions get under way Sept. 27, the Goblin King takes a moment to talk to Wrestling with Pop Culture about his cruel intentions for anyone who crosses his path.

The Goblin King emerged from the Netherworld a few years ago. Tell me a little bit about yourself and why you’ve chosen to enter our realm through the Netherworld.

The Goblin King is from the Dark Night. This is my third year at Netherworld, sitting on my throne in the Goblin Cave terrorizing people as they come through. I warn people as they wander through my cave that they’re lucky if they make it through.

I visited Netherworld on Friday the 13th this year. As I entered the Goblin Cave, you were telling people to “Bow down to he Goblin King.” Is that a request you often make as people enter your cave?

Oh, yes. I want all to bow to me. You’ve entered my kingdom, so you must bow and surrender yourself at my throne., Everybody must bow to the Goblin King.

Sometimes you greet people in a very different manner, such as with operatic singing. What’s the story behind that?

My first year at Netherworld, when I became the Goblin King, I would sing opera to hypnotize people as they came in to lead them towards me. Once they came towards me, I’d have them bow at my feet and surrender their souls.

This year the Goblin King is part of The Dead Ones. Tell me about The Dead Ones and where the Goblin King fits into this attraction.

Oh, the Dead Ones. That’s my favorite one. The Dead Ones are all the ones from the past who are coming back to take over the Dark Night again. The Goblin King is going to usher you into the new realm of what we call The Dead Ones.

When the Goblin King takes someone’s soul, what becomes of that person’s soul?

You become one of our servants and worship us. We mostly take the souls that will make us more powerful and stronger than ever.

Rumor has it the Goblin King is also involved in professional wrestling. Tell me a little more about that.

Oh, the Goblin King loves professional wrestling. The Goblin King takes over everything he goes to. He’s going to take over the world and take over the souls of those within the squared circle. Beware the Goblin King! Wrestling is my main strength because I love to take on anything that comes through my path.

Does wrestling exist in the Goblin King’s realm? If so, is it similar to the wrestling we know on this plane?

Yes, it does. It’s very similar. The Goblin King can not be controlled because I’m the king! Everywhere I go, people will be hypnotized by by my presence because I will take the souls of anyone who crosses my path.

I understand the Goblin King will be making his Monstrosity Championship Wrestling debut this weekend at Six Flags Over Georgia. What can you tell me about your involvement with MCW at Fright Fest?

Oh! When I come to MCW, prepare to bow to the king. Prepare to surrender all souls to the Goblin King. I’m coming to terrorize everything that comes through my path. Six Flags, beware! I’m looking for someone creepy that I can cast under my spell to add to my kingdom. I will turn monsters and human wrestlers alike into my goblins!
